GCL Technology Holdings Ltd., one of China's largest polysilicon producers, is pivoting into battery materials as the solar sector remains plagued by overcapacity and losses.
The company has already built capacity to produce 200,000 tons of lithium ion phosphate in southwestern China's Leshan city, positioning the commodity as a core growth engine for GCL, according to a company filing on Sunday.
GCL also plans to develop silicon-carbon anode, a next-generation battery material.
The move underscores mounting pressure across China's solar industry, where years of aggressive capacity expansion have led to deep oversupply and persistent losses. More manufacturers are now betting on battery materials and energy storage.
