Chinese turbine maker Ming Yang Smart Energy Group Ltd. is weighing plans to build a wind turbine factory in Spain after the UK blocked its proposed facility in Scotland on national security grounds.
The company has reportedly been hiring in Europe in recent months to build a local presence. Horatio Evers, chief executive officer of Ming Yang Europe, said regional manufacturing will be key to the company's ability to secure business.
"We are talking to many project developers in the market. The request for additional competition in the market is there," Evers said in an interview. "Localization is a key enabler for us to sell turbines in the European market."
A potential Ming Yang factory in Spain could produce offshore wind turbine blades as well as nacelles, Evers said. The company is scouting sites but has yet to finalize a location.
But the nation isn't a major market for offshore wind farms.
Ming Yang will need to secure orders elsewhere in Europe. Germany would be of interest for the company, but it isn't being pursued currently, Evers added.
With the UK, Europe's biggest offshore wind market, effectively closed off, the company will need to look for buyers in markets including Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark.
