Asked to comment on Chinese wind power equipment manufacturer Mingyang Smart Energy's recent plan to invest 1.5 billion pounds($2 billion)in Scotland to build a wind turbine factory, which has attracted considerable attention, and that some voices in the UK have expressed concerns that the project could pose a threat to national security,Guo Jiakun,a spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday that the Chinese government supports Chinese enterprises in conducting international cooperation in accordance with the law and regulations, while adhering to the principles of mutual benefit and market orientation.
The spokesperson noted that in recent years, legitimate economic and trade projects in the UK have frequently been affected by over-politicization and an overstretched concept of national security.Since the introduction of the UK National Security and Investment Act in 2022,the UK government has made over ten decisions to block or conditionally approve Chinese investments, according to Guo.
In addition, the UK government has not only intervened in the operations of British steel companies acquired by Chinese private enterprises but also, through retrospective reviews, demanded Chinese companies sell their shares in already acquired British semiconductor firms, undermining the security of Chinese investments under the pretext of national security,Guo further noted.
"China has always opposed the practice of overstretching the concept of national security and politicizing economic and trade issues,"he said."Unfortunately, some people in the UK are constantly rehashing absurd, ridiculous, and ignorant'China threat'fallacies. If this trend is allowed to spread,it will seriously impact how Chinese companies assess the investment environment in the UK and cause them to make cautious decisions."
